Rio Grande Valley Sector HQ

2006

US Department of Homeland Security

The Rio Grande Valley Sector Headquarters campus includes administration, offices, cafeteria, training, vehicle shops and conferencing space in a 400,000 SF campus in Southern Texas. Although not a specific mandate in the design brief, the key for this project was to balance federal agency requirements with the ones needed by the community. The building needed to be both substantial and inviting to the public. Designed around a courtyard square, the organization of architecture on the site speaks to historic forms of planning to create a public facade while retaining the interior courtyard for agency specific needs. Project achieved a LEED Gold status. Recipient of AIAs design award. Design Principal, HDR. Credit HDR/SmithGroup
