Science, discovery and food culture. The intent of this design study was predicated on the opportunity for the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History to acquire the cast of one of the largest dinosaur fossils in the world, found in Argentina. While the size of the fossil cast makes it a challenge to house it elsewhere in the museum, it also presents an opportunity to envision the space of the under-performing IMAX Theater and simultaneously re-examine its existing outdated food service facilities located on the 2 lower levels below. Several existential questions were uncovered and addressed: what if the fossil is not acquired, what is changing about food and food culture, how do we connect the opportunity to create an excitement for food, a fossil that may never arrive and engendering a curiosity for natural history? Complex series of analysis involving operational, revenue and space needs analysis with creative solutions was applauded by the Museum Board of Directors. Design Director with KlingStubbins/Jacobs.
